Iconic Women Series
My Iconic Women series is a project with great personal meaning. These paintings portray iconic women from history who have been habitually minimized, villainized, or misrepresented; in these paintings, I show them as they would appear if they were contemporary women, enjoying the freedoms and culture that they, themselves, have helped to create. What would Cleopatra be like if she were here now, living in a world influenced by the original Cleopatra? What about Joan of Arc, or Marie Antoinette? We find ourselves looking at a business tycoon, a radical activist, and an instagram influencer. Portraying our female icons as modern women reminds us to consider them as human beings, dimensional and flawed; and it is also a chance to portray them living in a bit more peace, no longer fighting for some of the very basic rights and privileges they had to fight so hard for in their first lives.
My paintings are meant to reflect contemporary poses, often parodying fashion magazines and other commercial portrayals of women, reminding us that even today, women are affected by capitalism and the male gaze. I paint these women in a modern, almost illustrative style which brings energy and vibrancy to the piece and enlivens any space that one of the paintings occupies. These are beautiful pieces for those who celebrate colour, power, humour, and of course...women.
Merci, Gisele Pelicot
-
“MERCI, GISELE PELICOT”
Gisele Pelicot testified against 50 men, including her husband, who drugged her repeatedly and allowed strangers to rape her. Pelicot’s bravery in court will change the face of France’s assault laws, which currently are written in such a way that an unconscious victim could not effectively claim assault.
Pelicot is not a historical woman—yet. I typically paint women from history, and I usually paint them as a fictional modern woman in her glory. But Pelicot is a modern woman, and she is in her glory now…and absolutely will be seen as an historical woman for future generations. So I have included her in my series with great joy.
