Making art is a radical act of ree

It’s a wild time in history, and you may be feeling like there’s nothing you can do to make a difference, that there’s no way to mitigate the evil that threatens our world.

But believe it or not, there is: make art. Art has played a pivotal role in furthering underground and subversive communications during times of fascism and war.

Quilts were the communication method for the Underground Railroad.

The White Rose leaflets were flyers dropped to encourage Germans to resist the Nazi regime. The Dada art movement was used to mock nationalism and militarism during World War I.The Guerilla Girls have been using art in public settings to expose sexism and political corruption since 1985.But how does taking time to create art, for yourself, also combat fascism?

Because fascism relies on panic, anger, and terror to manipulate. So when you take the time to live creatively—instead of destructively—the fascists lose. When you gather with neighbours and strangers to participate in peaceful activities, the fascists lose. When you spend time on a non-capitalistic pursuit like a hobby or craft, the fascists lose. So, instead of feeling decadent or selfish for choosing quiet, peaceful creation…know that creativity is a radical act of rebellion.
